Words and Thoughts from Grandma

Day One Hundred Thirty-One “Harvest Moon”

December 19, 2019 by Cathy Winkle

How embarrassing!  A grown woman, well-advanced in years, standing in the front yard clad in her pj’s, staring up at the sky.  Last night was one of those picture-perfect evenings.  As I stepped out to attend to my bird feeders, darkness had already blanketed our neighborhood on a perfectly cloudless evening.  We reside in a rural setting, not much in the way of street lights, or any lights for that matter.  On the backdrop of that blackened canvas, a stunning harvest moon was gazing down at me.  I stood as a child, mouth agape, trying to comprehend the beauty of the scene unfolding above me.  God was stirring this ole gal’s heart.  He was preparing my heart to meet with Him the following morning.

Isaiah chapter 40 is one glorious reveal of exactly Who God is.  Take a moment and allow your mind to comprehend these wondrous thoughts: The world’s oceans, which hold approximately 326 million trillion gallons of water, are measured by God “…in the hollow of His hand.”  The Earth’s mass is 13 million trillion, but merely as “small dust of the balance” to God.  And those 195 nations residing on this planet are “a drop of a bucket” in God’s vast economy.  Over 100 billion galaxies exist in our observable universe and our God “calleth them all by names.”  He has that great expanse measured, “meted out…with a span” using His mighty hand as a measuring tool.  I can certainly agree with Isaiah as he humbly admits, “there is no searching of his understanding.”

Wow, let that sink in for a minute.  What an awesome Father we have!  How insignificant is man compared to His glory.  But this God of power, Who holds the universe in His hand, promises in the same chapter to “feed his flock like a shepherd…gather the lambs with his arm…carry them in his bosom.”  His lambs, that’s US!  When I think that He would send His Son to suffer the humiliation of the cross to reach one lost sheep, my eyes well up with tears and my problems seem so small and insignificant in comparison.

That harvest moon was 200,000 plus miles away from me on that spectacular evening this past fall, but the Creator of that moon dwells within me and calls me His child.  Unfathomable!  I am speechless.

Isaiah 40:18   To whom then will ye liken God?  or what likeness will ye compare unto him?

Bonus: Read Isaiah 40 in its entirety, and dwell on the wondrous God we serve.
